Radar Open-Channel Flow Meter Selection: Specify the Complete Measurement Chain

2026-08-09

Radar open-channel flow meter selection starts with the discharge calculation, not the sensor's distance range. A combined surface-velocity and level instrument still needs channel geometry and a justified relationship between the measured surface velocity and the cross-section mean velocity. Identify who supplies and verifies each part of that calculation.

Radar Open-Channel Flow Meter Selection: Choose the Calculation Route

For a velocity-area system, discharge is Q = A(h) × Vmean: wetted area at water level h multiplied by mean velocity across that section. The surface velocity observed by radar is an input to estimating Vmean, not an interchangeable name for it.

A surveyed weir or flume uses a different route: an applicable head-discharge relationship under specified hydraulic conditions. Do not combine a structure's equation with an unrelated velocity correction. Establish whether the project needs velocity-area measurement or head measurement at a calibrated structure before selecting hardware.

Where MV-RD2480 Fits

For the METRAVON MV-RD2480, compare the site's slowest required surface velocity with the published 0.10 m/s lower limit. Check the level-distance span against both flood clearance and low water. Its 9-28 VDC supply requirement must also be met at the instrument terminals after cable losses, not merely at the power supply.

Include the channel survey, data processing and field comparison in the scope alongside the MV-RD2480.

Request the current register documentation and confirm which calculation functions belong in the instrument, RTU or data logger. Do not assume a particular geometry table, totalizer or storage function from the presence of Modbus RTU alone.

Conditions That Can Change the Purchase Decision

Describe low-flow surfaces, flood levels, debris, downstream gates and possible backwater. A site with frequent velocities below the published lower limit needs an explicit plan for those periods. If reverse flow matters, require confirmation of the offered direction reporting and calculation behaviour before ordering.

Budget for the mounting work, surveyed geometry and reference measurements as well as the transmitter. The channel geometry record and surface-to-mean velocity assessment are separate deliverables that affect the usefulness of the final flow record.

Questions for the Flow-Monitoring Specification

Q1. Can this installation be specified for compliance reporting?

Not from the product model alone. Establish the applicable measurement and reporting requirements, then obtain evidence that the complete method, calibration and records meet them. No regulatory or custody-transfer approval is implied here.

Q2. Should loss of a velocity reading be stored as zero discharge?

No. Zero is a measurement result; loss of validity is a different state. Define the alarm, substitution policy and quality flag in the logger so totals do not silently treat unavailable observations as a dry channel.

Summary

Buy a defined measurement chain, with responsibilities for geometry, velocity conversion and acceptance. For an open-channel project assessment, provide the section drawing, expected flows, mounting photographs, power supply and destination system.
