Radar Flow Meters

Selecting Hints

Assess METRAVON MV-RD2480 for non-contact open-channel flow monitoring. Check channel survey, surface velocity, water level and RTU interface before requesting a quote.

A Radar Flow Reading Needs a Measured Channel

The METRAVON MV-RD2480 measures surface velocity and water level without contacting the water. Discharge is not a third direct sensor measurement: it depends on the channel's wetted area at that level and on how representative surface velocity is of mean velocity. A channel survey and a method for validating the velocity relationship are therefore part of the flow project.

Before ordering the station

  1. Provide a channel cross-section, stage datum, normal and flood levels, mounting drawing and photographs across the expected flow range.
  2. Check whether bends, backwater, vegetation, debris or changing sediment make the proposed radar target unrepresentative.
  3. Specify instrument power, RS485 Modbus RTU register needs, data logger or RTU, and access for surveying and maintenance.

At acceptance, compare measured level with a site reference and validate calculated discharge against an agreed field method at representative conditions. Record the cross-section, alignment and calculation settings so that erosion or sediment changes can trigger a review. A radar water-level meter alone is appropriate when the project only needs stage, not discharge.
