120 GHz Radar for Small Vessels and Narrow Wells

A 120 GHz radar can offer a narrow beam and compact antenna, which may help in small vessels, narrow wells and crowded installations. Those advantages do not remove near-field limits, nozzle reflections, condensation or the need for a representative target. Selection should be based on the exact antenna and instrument data, not frequency alone.

Turn beam angle into real clearance

Use the stated beam angle and measuring distance to calculate beam diameter at critical points. Plot that envelope against walls, pipes, ladders, pumps and well structures. A narrow beam can pass between obstructions, but small alignment errors become more important in a tight space.

Confirm whether the published beam angle applies to the selected antenna and reference definition. Compare the complete beam, not an ideal centreline.

Check short-range and near-field limits

Small tanks often operate close to the antenna. Verify blocking distance, minimum measurable distance and high-level safety margin for the exact dielectric and antenna. The required alarm point must remain outside any uncertain near field.

Account for nozzle length and antenna reference plane when converting distance to level. An adapter or recessed mounting can consume valuable headroom and introduce a strong fixed echo.

Design the process connection

Confirm nozzle internal diameter, length, weld quality and orientation. Follow the required antenna projection or approved recessed arrangement. A compact process connection is useful only when it does not behave like a waveguide or trap condensate.

For open wells, use a stiff, level mount that withstands wind, vibration and accidental impact. Verify the reference elevation and provide a way to reinstall the sensor at the same position after service.

Evaluate the real target

Water surfaces, small liquid tanks and solids present different echoes. Turbulence, foam, vapour, dust and a steep material pile can move or weaken the useful target. A narrow beam may measure a local peak or valley that is not representative of average inventory.

Specify whether the duty is process control, high alarm, pump cycling or inventory. The chosen point and response settings should support that decision rather than merely produce a stable number.

Commission the whole signal chain

Save echo curves at empty or independently known low level, normal level and the highest safe test point. Verify distance, converted level, 4–20 mA or digital output, PLC scaling, display and alarms. Test lost-echo and out-of-range states.

Inspect condensation and deposits after real service. A small antenna or recessed nozzle may be more sensitive to a water film than clean-bench testing suggests.

Worked narrow-well review

A level sensor must look down a narrow wet well containing cable brackets. The selected antenna's beam is plotted through the full range, and the mount is offset to avoid the nearest bracket while remaining over representative water. The high alarm remains outside the blocking distance.

Commissioning verifies several pump cycles, rapid inflow and condensation. The team stores the reference elevation and bracket dimensions with the echo curves for future replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Is 120 GHz always better than 80 GHz?

No. Antenna, range, process conditions, installation and application evidence matter more than frequency alone.

Does a narrower beam eliminate false echoes?

It reduces exposure to some objects but cannot fix poor alignment, nozzle reflections or an unsuitable target.

Can it measure to the very top of a small tank?

Only within the model's specified blocking distance and safety margin under the actual process conditions.
