Scale Accuracy vs Load Cell Accuracy: Procurement Guide

A load cell certificate describes the transducer under defined test conditions; a scale accuracy statement describes the installed system under its operating and verification rules. The two are related but cannot be substituted. Platform stiffness, load position, modules, cables, summing, indicator resolution, filtering, temperature and calibration references all affect scale performance. Procurement should specify the required weighing result and acceptance method first, then select cells and components that can support it with margin. Buying the smallest datasheet error does not guarantee the best working scale.

Define scale performance

State maximum capacity, minimum useful load, verification interval, display increment, allowable error and use case. Process batching, inventory, checkweighing and regulated trade may use different criteria. Define environmental and dynamic conditions. A single percent accuracy without range or test procedure invites incompatible interpretations.

Read cell specifications correctly

Compare nonlinearity, hysteresis, repeatability, creep, temperature effects and combined error using the same definitions. Check capacity, rated output and minimum verification information where applicable. Datasheet values are usually referenced to full output and controlled force application, not the final scale's displayed increments.

Account for multiple cells

Sensitivity differences, support height, structural stiffness and junction-box trimming affect load sharing and corner error. The summed system may not equal one cell multiplied by count. Check individual signals under centre and eccentric loads. Trimming can balance small differences but cannot correct binding or a flexible platform.

Include structure and installation

Foundation movement, deck deflection, side load, friction, piping, ramps, restraints, wind and vibration create apparent weight. Use suitable modules and flexible connections. Inspect installation before calibration. Mechanical errors can vary with load position and temperature and may not appear during a single centre-load test.

Include electronics and resolution

Match excitation, bridge output, amplifier range, ADC counts, noise and filtering to minimum load. Check six-wire sense where supported and cable effects. Confirm indicator or PLC scaling and time response. Resolution should be meaningfully above noise and uncertainty but should not be advertised as accuracy.

Define calibration and verification

Specify traceable loads, range points, loading direction, eccentric positions, repeatability, stabilization and uncertainty. Record as-found and as-left results. If full range cannot be loaded, state the validated substitution and extrapolation. Factory cell data supplements but does not replace installed calibration.

Review legal and quality boundaries

For trade or regulated use, identify applicable approval, class, sealing and verification requirements early. General industrial calibration may not satisfy legal metrology. Ensure the exact indicator, cells and assembly are included where type approval matters. Do not imply certification beyond the documented scope.

Evaluate bids as systems

Compare cells, modules, structure, junction box, indicator, software, installation, calibration, documentation and maintenance. Require a stated system performance basis and acceptance test. Record exclusions and assumptions. This allows procurement to compare real outcomes rather than different component accuracy claims.

Keep a concise approval record that states the operating case, assumptions, accepted limits, responsible owner and evidence reviewed. Attach the relevant drawing, configuration, test results and unresolved deviations. Define what process, mechanical, electrical or software change requires reassessment. This record prevents a technically sound decision from becoming an unsupported setting after staff, equipment or operating conditions change.
