Site release should be the result of defined acceptance gates, not a general statement that installation and commissioning are complete. Radar level measurement crosses process, mechanical, electrical, control and operational responsibilities. A missing nozzle dimension, wrong reference plane or discarded quality flag can undermine an otherwise capable instrument. The approval workflow should assign evidence and decision owners to each gate, control deviations and prevent automatic operation until critical functions are proven. The same record then supports maintenance, audits and future replacement without repeating basic discovery work.
Gate 1: approve the application basis
Confirm medium, operating and abnormal conditions, vessel geometry, level range, measurement purpose, accuracy, response time and failure consequence. Record the selected principle and rejected alternatives.
Verify exact antenna, process connection, materials, seal, pressure and temperature ratings, output and approvals. Do not release an unspecified product family for purchase.
Gate 2: accept mechanical installation
Inspect tag and model, nozzle, antenna projection, orientation, reference plane, beam clearance, gasket, fasteners and pressure boundary. Compare as-built dimensions with the approved drawing.
Check hazardous-area entries, grounding, weather protection and safe maintenance access. Record photographs and approved deviations before insulation or covers hide the installation.
Gate 3: accept electrical and communication work
Verify supply voltage, loop resistance, barriers, shielding, grounding, surge protection and cable route. For digital networks, check topology, termination, address and register map.
Confirm that fault current, device status and data age reach the PLC or SCADA. A changing value without quality information is not a complete interface test.
Gate 4: validate measurement performance
Set reference geometry from measured dimensions and compare radar distance and level with independent references at representative points. Review selected echoes and signal margin.
Capture curves during relevant filling, agitation, foam, steam or dust states. Control false-echo suppression and document any untested operating envelope.
Gate 5: prove control and protection
Test scaling, trends, high and low alarms, damping, interlocks and final equipment response. Simulate lost echo, power failure and communication loss.
Test independent high-high or low-low devices through their separate paths. Remove bypasses and confirm the plant returns to its approved operating mode.
Gate 6: complete handover
Store model, serial, firmware, settings, echo curves, drawings, certificates, test results and training evidence. Assign owners and dates to every noncritical open item.
Require responsible sign-off from instrumentation, operations and safety roles. Define an early-service review and triggers for reapproval after process, geometry, hardware or software change.
Audit the release package
Before final release, have a person who did not perform the configuration check that required evidence is present, legible and tied to the correct tag. Confirm that model code, drawing revision, parameter backup, echo curve, alarm test and deviation list agree. Record the audit result and correct omissions while site knowledge is still available. Independent package review is a practical control against approving a technically successful installation whose documentation cannot support safe operation or later maintenance. Record the reviewer, date, accepted exceptions and final document location.
Engineering checklist
- Approve the application and exact model.
- Inspect mechanical work against drawings.
- Verify wiring, communications and quality status.
- Validate readings and echoes at known states.
- Prove alarms, faults and protection paths.
- Close handover with accountable sign-off.
Frequently asked questions
Can site use begin with open items?
Only noncritical items with assessed risk, temporary controls, owner and closure date may remain.
Who owns final release?
The site's designated authority should release operation using evidence approved by each responsible discipline.
When is reapproval required?
After changes that affect process conditions, geometry, reference, antenna, output, control logic or protection duty.
