Radar Level Site Suitability Review for Process Tanks

Site suitability is the evidence that a radar level assembly fits one real process tank and its operational duty. A device proven in another vessel or listed for the same nominal range may face different vapour, foam, condensation, nozzle geometry, internals, fill rate and alarm consequence. The review should bring process, mechanical, instrumentation, control and maintenance information into one decision, define the conditions actually supported and identify what must be tested at commissioning. It should not be reduced to a general statement that radar works on liquids.

Define the intended use

State whether the radar supports indication, automatic control, inventory, transfer, high alarm or reporting. Define range, uncertainty, response, availability and failure consequence. Identify any independent high-high function and keep its design separate. The same reading may be adequate for trend but unsuitable for a protective action or commercial inventory decision.

Review process reflection and exposure

Record product, dielectric behaviour, temperature, pressure, vapour, foam, condensation, agitation, coating, corrosion and cleaning. Include recipe, startup and upset states. Verify antenna and seal materials and model-specific ratings. Do not assume steam, foam or low dielectric has no effect; review expected signal margin for the actual envelope.

Verify vessel and beam geometry

Measure reference plane, height, nozzle bore and length, antenna projection, maximum level, walls, coils, ladders, agitators and inlets. Plot the beam with alignment tolerance. Check blocking-distance margin and the measured surface location. Reconcile drawings with as-built evidence and record any inaccessible assumptions.

Assess dynamic conditions

Calculate filling and emptying rates, alarm response time and remaining freeboard. Review turbulence, vortex, inlet jets and foam transitions. Configure damping and tracking to follow credible changes without unsafe delay. Where a condition cannot be observed before startup, define an early production test and interim operational controls.

Verify system use of the value

Define output, power, barriers, communication, units, scaling, quality, timestamps, alarms and final actions. Test invalid and stale data behavior. Identify tank-table ownership if volume is used. A correct field value can still be unsuitable if the PLC reverses range or a remote system holds an old value as healthy.

Review risk and maintainability

Identify false-high, false-low, frozen and lost-signal consequences. Confirm independent protection where required. Check safe access, isolation, inspection, cleaning, configuration tools and spares. Set initial inspection from consequence and expected deposits, then refine it from as-found diagnostics rather than assuming the radar is maintenance-free.

Approve a documented envelope

Retain application data, exact model, drawings, materials, certificates, configuration, echo curves and acceptance results. Classify the decision as approved, conditional or rejected and assign owners to conditions. Reopen the review after product, pressure, nozzle, range, alarm, firmware or control-logic changes.

Document the verified operating envelope

Separate conditions directly observed on site from those supported only by model-specific supplier evidence and from conditions that remain unknown. Record product, level range, temperature, pressure, foam, agitation, fill rate and signal margin with the exact model, antenna and settings. Assign a future test or operating restriction to material uncertainty. This envelope gives later engineers a clear reapproval threshold instead of relying on the vague statement that radar was previously successful on the tank.
