Product Details

METRAVON MV-RD702 is a corrosion-resistant guided wave radar level meter for liquid tanks. Its insulated rod or cable probe uses a fluoropolymer covering to separate the sensing assembly from the liquid. Selection starts with the chemical composition, concentration and operating temperature, because a corrosion-resistant probe is not automatically compatible with every acid, alkali or cleaning fluid.

Check every wetted component, not only the coating

Identify the required PFA or PTFE construction in the quotation. Also list the process connection, flange lining, seal and any exposed fastener or end fitting. A compatible probe covering does not protect an incompatible connection above it. Include vapour exposure and cleaning conditions as well as the liquid normally stored in the tank.

Application detailWhy it changes the selection
Chemical and concentrationIdentify mixtures and contaminants; a common chemical name alone is insufficient for material approval.
Temperature and pressureThe coating, seal and connection must suit their combined operating conditions, including cleaning.
Deposits or crystallisationBuildup on the probe can alter the echo and complicate cleaning or withdrawal.
FoamDescribe its persistence and thickness; validate the actual echo rather than assuming a fixed penetration depth.
Mechanical contactPrevent rubbing against the nozzle, wall or agitator that could damage the covering.

Sizing a corrosion-resistant guided wave radar level meter

The cable configuration is listed up to 20 m, while the rod version is listed up to 6 m. Specify the insertion length from the process reference plane, not simply the outside tank height. Allow for the nozzle and the unusable regions at the probe ends. A high-level setpoint near the flange needs an explicit dead-zone check.

METRAVON MV-RD702 guided wave radar with covered rod and cable probes
Covered MV-RD702 probes require protection from abrasion during installation and service.

Provide nozzle bore and length, flange standard and facing, plus the space available above the tank. Lower the probe without dragging it across sharp edges. Avoid the fill stream and moving internals. If the tank must remain sealed during routine work, plan isolation and access with the plant team; a removable probe is not a live-maintenance provision.

Output and enclosure choices

The two-wire version uses 24 VDC and 4-20 mA/HART. RS485/Modbus requires the appropriate electronics and wiring; state whether the receiver is a PLC, RTU or data logger and request its matching register information. Select the enclosure for the installation location: the metal-housing options are listed as IP67 and the plastic option as IP65. Neither rating establishes chemical compatibility of external surfaces.

During commissioning, compare the indicated level with an independent reference at several accessible points. Where foam develops only during mixing or filling, include that operating state in the trial. Record the level reading and signal behaviour before and after a cleaning cycle, rather than approving the installation solely from an empty-tank test.

Maintenance and ordering questions

Q1. Can I cut a coated cable to fit an existing tank?

Only if an approved procedure exists for that exact assembly. Cutting may expose the metal underneath or compromise the end seal. Ordering the required finished length is preferable to making an unapproved modification to a chemical barrier.

Q2. Does the covering guarantee a reading through foam?

No. The covering addresses wetted-material selection, while foam affects the measurement signal. Provide the actual liquid and foaming conditions, then agree a verification trial. Do not use a single foam-thickness claim as the acceptance criterion for all processes.

Q3. When is an uncoated probe worth considering?

If the entire wetted assembly is chemically suitable and deposits or abrasion make a covering undesirable, compare the stainless-steel MV-RD701. The decision should follow the material assessment, not a price comparison between two model names.

For a chemical-tank quotation, attach the medium specification, operating and cleaning conditions, required probe length, connection drawing and output. Request the selected coating and seal materials as explicit order items so the delivered assembly can be checked before installation.
