Radar vs Ultrasonic vs Capacitive Level Measurement: Select by Duty

2026-08-10

Radar vs ultrasonic vs capacitive level measurement is a choice between different physical measurements and installation burdens. Begin with the required result: continuous liquid height, a point alarm, inventory or interface. A point switch and a continuous transmitter are not equivalent purchases even when both are called level sensors.

Radar vs Ultrasonic vs Capacitive Level Measurement

MethodWhat it relies onSelection concern
RadarA usable microwave return from the required target.Reflection, obstructions, foam, antenna deposits and the process connection.
UltrasonicA sound path through the gas space and a detectable echo.Gas composition, temperature gradients, acoustic obstruction and surface conditions.
CapacitiveA defined change in capacitance around the sensing arrangement.Product electrical properties, coating, reference geometry and contact materials.

This comparison does not establish that a particular model of every technology is available with the required rating. Eliminate unsuitable mechanisms first, then evaluate actual offered configurations. Avoid assigning a generic accuracy or price to an entire technology family.

Use the Gas Space and Maintenance Access to Narrow the Choice

Ultrasound requires an acoustic transmission medium; vacuum service is therefore a fundamental problem for that method. Other gas-space conditions need model-specific assessment, not automatic rejection based on the word vapour. Radar avoids that acoustic dependency, but still needs a suitable process-facing assembly and a detectable target.

A contact probe can avoid a wide free-space beam but adds exposure to corrosion, coating and material movement. If the probe cannot be removed or cleaned safely, that maintenance constraint belongs in the selection decision before any comparison of instrument purchase prices.

Where MV-RD12 Fits in the Comparison

METRAVON MV-RD12 provides non-contact liquid measurement with a listed 0.1-30 m interval, 32 mm PTFE lens and 8-degree beam. Use these dimensions to review the available nozzle and internal obstacles. Pressure and temperature suitability remain configuration-specific; an 80 GHz label does not approve the tank connection.

Evaluate the MV-RD12 configuration against the same duty and acceptance criteria used for alternatives.

Specify 4-20 mA/HART or the appropriate RS485 electronics according to the receiver. An interface match does not establish measurement suitability, just as a good local reading does not establish that the PLC is interpreting the signal correctly.

Compare the Installed Cost and the Test Burden

Ask each supplier to identify required fittings, supports, cleaning access, signal conditioning and site tests. A lower-cost sensor may require more shutdown work or provide insufficient diagnostics for the intended duty. Conversely, a more complex instrument adds no value if a simpler, documented arrangement already meets the requirement.

Use the difficult production state in acceptance: variable foam, low inventory, cleaning residue or changing composition as applicable. Record which condition each candidate has demonstrated and which remains an assumption.

Technology Questions

Q1. Does radar make an independent high-level switch unnecessary?

Not by itself. A continuous measurement and an independent protective function have different requirements. Keep the site's risk assessment and required protection evidence separate from this technology comparison.

Q2. Can the existing fitting decide the technology?

It is a constraint, not the complete decision. Check whether the fitting gives a usable beam or probe path and whether adapting it changes sealing, reference position or maintenance access.

Summary

Select the least complicated arrangement that can demonstrate the required measurement. Request a technology review with the process states, vessel section and receiver requirements, rather than an unsupported ranking of sensor types.
