Bulk Solids Radar Application Approval: Risk and Evidence

2026-09-08

Application approval for bulk-solids radar should state what has been proven and what remains uncertain. A radar can track one local surface reliably while the site's reported inventory remains uncertain because of cones, ratholes, compaction and density. Dust, deposits and changing filling patterns can reduce signal margin over time. Approval therefore needs more than a successful startup reading: it should connect material and silo behavior to beam placement, diagnostics, output and alarms, quantify the intended use and assign controls for untested conditions and future changes.

Separate measurement from inventory

Define the raw distance, converted level, volume and mass as distinct quantities. State which one is approved for alarm, control, replenishment or reporting. Document geometry and bulk-density assumptions. A distance accuracy statement does not cover local surface representativeness or material compaction, and commercial stock decisions need uncertainty appropriate to that use.

Approve the material envelope

List products, particle size, moisture, dielectric response, angle of repose, bulk density, dust, adhesion, abrasion, temperature and electrostatic conditions. Include blending, cleaning and seasonal changes. State which materials were observed during validation and which rely on supplier evidence. Assign a review trigger for a new product or materially different condition.

Approve the surface interpretation

Map filling cones, discharge funnels, ratholes, bridges and avalanches. Explain why the chosen beam location represents the required operational decision. Where one point cannot represent average inventory, state the expected bias and supporting method such as weighing, multiple measurements or periodic survey. Avoid hiding this limitation behind a percent-full display.

Approve installation and beam

Verify as-built nozzle, reference plane, antenna projection, alignment, beam width, maximum level, internals and fill stream. Include roof and bracket tolerance. Record photographs and dimensions. Any accepted obstruction or aiming deviation should be linked to echo evidence and a specific operating limitation rather than a general concession.

Approve signal and failure behavior

Review echo curves at known empty, filling and loaded states; record signal margin, competing targets and tracking. Control false-echo suppression, damping and lost-echo response. Verify quality and stale status in PLC or inventory systems. High alarms should fail predictably during dust or signal loss, and independent protection should be assessed where consequence requires it.

Approve maintenance and access

Confirm safe access, inspection and approved cleaning for the antenna and enclosure. Establish an early-service review after representative campaigns and adjust intervals from as-found deposits and diagnostics. Include extraction, purge and weather components. Define who captures evidence before cleaning or reset so gradual deterioration and recurrence remain visible.

Issue a conditional or final decision

Classify approval as accepted, conditional or rejected. For each condition, name the missing evidence, temporary control, owner, due date and verification method. Retain model, firmware, geometry, settings, curves, tests and uncertainty. Reopen approval after changes to material, inlet, extraction, silo structure, range, alarm duty or software conversion.

Assign residual-risk ownership

For every limitation, state the operating condition, possible consequence, detection method, temporary or permanent control, owner and review date. Examples include an untested dust density, uncertain bulk-density conversion, inaccessible obstruction or high-level condition not reached during commissioning. Approval should not hide these items in general notes. Explicit ownership allows production to begin under controlled conditions where justified and ensures that missing evidence is closed rather than becoming an undocumented permanent assumption.

Engineering checklist

  • Define approved raw and converted quantities.
  • State the verified material envelope.
  • Explain local-surface meaning.
  • Link as-built geometry to echo evidence.
  • Test quality, alarms and lost echo.
  • Record conditions, controls and review triggers.

Frequently asked questions

Can a reliable radar still give poor inventory?

Yes. Surface shape, geometry and bulk density can dominate inventory uncertainty.

What makes an approval conditional?

A material condition or operating state remains untested but can be managed by a defined temporary control and later test.

When must approval be reopened?

Review it after meaningful material, geometry, filling, extraction, range or control-duty changes.
