Tank Radar Selection Gate: Data Required Before Approval

A selection gate prevents a tank radar from being approved while critical application data remain unknown. It is not another generic checklist: each required field supports a decision about measurement principle, antenna, materials, mounting, output, risk or acceptance. The gate should stop release when missing information could change equipment or protection, while allowing clearly recorded low-risk assumptions to be resolved later. A concise, accountable gate is more useful than a large form completed with guesses and copied values.

Gate the process data

Require every stored and cleaning fluid, dielectric behaviour, temperature, pressure, vapour, foam, condensation, agitation, coating and abnormal condition. State concentration and material changes. Unknown compatibility or pressure data should block approval of the process interface rather than being hidden under a broad application name.

Gate the geometry

Require tank height and diameter, roof and bottom, nozzle bore and length, reference plane, levels, inlets, outlets and internals. Use dimensioned drawings and photographs. A missing nozzle or maximum-level distance can change antenna choice, blocking margin and even whether radar is suitable.

Gate the performance duty

Define indication, control, inventory, transfer, alarm or reporting purpose and corresponding accuracy, response, availability and failure consequence. Distinguish distance accuracy from converted volume or mass uncertainty. Identify which interfaces and final actions must be tested and whether an independent protection layer is required.

Gate the exact configuration

Approve full model code, antenna, process connection, seal, materials, rating, housing, entry, power, output, communication and certification. Check accessories and software. A family name or supplier statement without exact drawings and applicable certificates should not pass technical release.

Gate installation and maintenance

Confirm beam clearance, antenna projection, mounting rigidity, grounding, surge protection, cable route, isolation and safe access. Define initial inspection and diagnostic access. Reject arrangements that can only be maintained through avoidable exposure, vessel entry or unavailable proprietary tools.

Gate acceptance and ownership

Attach known-level, echo, output, status, alarm and fault tests and define responsible reviewers. Record assumptions, deviations, evidence source, risk and closure date. The gate should also list changes that reopen selection, including product, range, nozzle, fill rate, firmware or protection duty.

Define gate evidence quality

For every required field, state acceptable evidence: measured dimension, controlled drawing, process specification, certificate, supplier confirmation or field test. Distinguish verified values from estimates and assign an expiry or closure condition to assumptions. Include blocking distance, high-high architecture and acceptance method in the gate record so safety and near-range decisions are visible. The approver should sample supporting files rather than accepting completed checkboxes alone. Evidence quality is what makes a selection gate useful and repeatable across tanks and future projects.

Gate outcome and follow-up

Record one of three outcomes: approved for purchase, conditionally approved, or returned for missing information. A conditional result must list the exact uncertainty and the test or document that will close it before installation or operation. Route changed vessel, process or control data back through the gate. Store the signed record with the final model code and quotation revision. This simple outcome discipline prevents an incomplete questionnaire from being treated as technical approval and preserves the reasons behind the selected radar.
