Water-Tank Level Switches for Toren Air Systems: Selection Guide

“Toren air” is an Indonesian expression for a household or commercial water-storage tank. In English technical writing, the equipment is normally described as a water-tank level switch or automatic pump controller. The application may look simple, but reliability depends on tank geometry, fill and drawdown rates, water quality, pump power, wiring and the required response to sensor failure. A switch used for routine filling is different from an independent overflow alarm or dry-run protection device. Define the start, stop, high and low points and decide what should happen after power failure, a broken cable or a stuck float before choosing the hardware.

Define the tank and pump sequence

Provide tank height, usable level range, inlet and outlet positions, pump flow, normal demand and allowable cycling. State whether the pump fills the tank or draws from it.

Document automatic, manual and alarm modes. For two pumps, define duty rotation, standby start, fault response and whether one sensor failure can disable both pumps.

Select an appropriate sensing method

Cable floats are economical and suit many clean-water tanks when there is enough free movement. Side or top-mounted floats provide fixed points but require compatible nozzles and accessible installation.

Conductive electrodes depend on water conductivity and buildup; continuous pressure, ultrasonic or radar sensors may suit telemetry or variable-speed control. Choose from operating conditions, not price alone.

Protect against overflow and dry running

Routine start and stop levels need adequate separation to prevent rapid cycling. Add high and low alarms with delays appropriate to actual filling and drawdown rates.

Where consequence warrants it, use an independent high-high or low-low device. A controller cannot protect against every fault if sensing, logic and output share the same failure path.

Match contacts to the motor circuit

Check switch voltage, current and utilization category. Pump motors have high starting current and normally require a relay, contactor or controller input rather than direct switching by a small float contact.

Include overload and short-circuit protection, safe isolation and suitable enclosure ratings. Use surge protection and grounding for outdoor tanks and long exposed cables.

Install for free movement and service

Keep floats and probes away from inlet turbulence, ladders, walls and pipes. Secure cables without restricting travel and prevent the weight from striking or tangling with internal structures.

Use potable-water-compatible materials where required. Provide safe access, gland sealing and a test method that does not require unsafe entry into the tank.

Commission the complete control path

Raise and lower the level through each operating point and record start, stop, alarm and reset levels. Test manual mode, power restoration, open cable and sensor-fault behavior.

Follow each signal through relay or PLC to pump and alarm. Retain the wiring diagram and results in the local language so operators can troubleshoot without bypassing protection.

Prepare a practical handover

Label each field switch and panel control consistently and provide a simple operating sequence beside the detailed drawing. State who may use manual mode and how long a bypass may remain active.

Record normal pump run time and tank refill time during commissioning. A later change in these values can reveal leakage, blocked piping, pump wear or a level device that no longer switches at the intended point.
