Edible Oil Tank Level Measurement and Inventory Conversion

Edible oils are generally clean liquids, yet level and inventory measurement still require careful design. Dielectric response may be lower than for water, temperature changes density, and tank geometry makes volume conversion nonlinear in many vessels. Hygienic construction, product changeover and condensation at the antenna must be considered with measurement performance.

Define product and operating range

Record oil type, temperature, dielectric behaviour, density range, viscosity and any water or solids contamination. Include filling, heating, settling, transfer, cleaning and empty states. Different oils or blends may require different density data even when the same radar measures level.

Specify whether the duty is pump control, high alarm, usable inventory, mass estimate or custody transfer. Ordinary process radar should not be presented as legal-for-trade measurement without the required approved system.

Confirm echo and installation geometry

Provide the minimum expected reflection condition, range and antenna data. Map the full beam against heating coils, ladders, inlet streams and tank roof structures. Verify nozzle bore, length, antenna projection and blocking distance.

A still surface can produce a strong echo, but foam during filling, condensation or a deposited oil film may change the near-field response. Save curves during representative temperature transitions.

Use hygienic and compatible construction

Check antenna, flange, gasket and process seal against all oils and cleaning media. Use drainable, cleanable connections where food-safety procedures require them. Non-contact does not mean the process connection is outside the product-contact review.

Avoid recessed pockets that retain old product and complicate changeover. Any purge or rinse must meet plant hygiene and air-quality rules.

Convert level to volume correctly

Use one datum for antenna reference, tank drawing and strapping table. Vertical cylinders are linear only through constant-area sections; cones, dished ends and horizontal tanks require geometry or a validated table.

Preserve raw distance and level with calculated volume. Version the table and interpolation method, and flag values outside its calibrated range rather than extrapolating silently.

Separate volume and mass

Mass requires density at the relevant temperature and composition. Document temperature compensation and data source. Reporting many decimal places does not reduce uncertainty from tank geometry, datum or density.

Reconcile stock change against weighed receipts and transfers with synchronized timestamps. Include connected pipework and transactions posted late before adjusting the instrument.

Commission the complete chain

Verify known low, normal and high levels through local reading, output, PLC, tank table and inventory display. Test high and low alarms, lost echo and power recovery. Record oil type and temperature at each point.

Revalidate after product, antenna, connection, tank repair, table or density-model changes. Retain approved as-left parameters and reconciliation evidence.

Worked inventory review

A heated horizontal tank shows stable radar level but a recurring mass difference after product transfer. Raw distance agrees with a manual reference, while the PLC uses linear percentage-to-volume conversion. The team replaces it with the approved nonlinear tank table and preserves the radar calibration.

Density is then corrected from the recorded oil temperature and grade. Transfer reconciliation improves without forcing an arbitrary level offset, and the calculation version is linked to its effective date.

  • Record oil, temperature and density ranges.
  • Map beam, nozzle and tank internals.
  • Verify hygienic materials and cleanability.
  • Use a validated tank table and common datum.
  • Separate volume from density-based mass.
  • Test alarms and the complete calculation chain.

Frequently asked questions

Can radar directly measure edible-oil mass?

No. It measures distance or level; mass also requires volume geometry and temperature-dependent density.

Is 50% level always 50% volume?

Only in a constant-area vertical section, not in cones, dished ends or horizontal tanks.

Does non-contact radar eliminate hygiene review?

No. Antenna and process connection can still receive product, vapour and cleaning solution.
