A radar level meter should not be accepted only because its local display looks plausible. Acceptance must prove the installation geometry, configuration, signal quality, output scaling, control-system display and alarm response as one chain. A concise record created at commissioning becomes the baseline for maintenance, replacement and fault diagnosis.
Record equipment identity
Capture manufacturer, model, antenna, process connection, range, output, power supply, firmware, serial number and hazardous-area marking. Link the instrument to its tag, vessel and approved data sheet. Photograph the nameplate and installed orientation where permitted.
List accessories that affect performance or safety, including isolation devices, thermal extensions, purge fittings, surge protection, cable glands and remote displays. Record certificates and drawing revisions rather than storing an unidentified screenshot.
Verify installed geometry
Measure antenna reference plane, empty distance, zero datum, nozzle bore and length, antenna projection and maximum operating level. Check the full beam against ladders, coils, beams, agitators and fill streams. Confirm bracket alignment and mechanical stability.
Note internal structures with their distances from the antenna. These dimensions help distinguish real fixed echoes from material movement and prevent unsafe false-echo mapping.
Capture configuration and diagnostics
Export or photograph critical parameters: medium group, range, blocking distance, response speed, false-echo map, fail-safe current, communication address and output variable. Save the raw echo curve at known low, normal and high points where feasible.
Record selected echo, distance, level and signal-quality indicators. A clean curve without an independent reference is not enough; document how actual level was established.
Test the signal chain
Verify local value against 4–20 mA, HART or digital data, PLC raw input, engineering scaling, HMI display, historian and any volume or mass calculation. Inject or simulate known points only in accordance with the approved test procedure.
Confirm units and decimal placement. Test cable shielding, grounding and loop voltage where relevant. Preserve as-left values and identify any temporary bypasses removed after testing.
Prove alarms and failure response
Test high, low and diagnostic alarms at agreed setpoints, including configured damping and process response time. Verify relay or PLC action, interlocks, indication and event recording. Check lost echo, over-range, under-range and power-loss behaviour.
Where a separate overfill or safety device exists, test it independently. Do not infer safety performance from the process radar's normal reading.
Close out and maintain the baseline
Record outstanding deviations, responsible person and due date. Obtain approval from instrumentation, operations and the relevant safety function owner. Store parameters, echo curves, drawings and test results in a retrievable asset record.
Define inspection triggers for buildup, condensation, weather exposure and process change. Future troubleshooting should compare against this accepted baseline before parameters are altered. The close-out record should also state the tested process conditions and any untested range. When a full-level test is impractical, document the simulation method, remaining limitation and responsible approval. Confirm that operators received the correct alarm response instructions and that maintenance personnel can retrieve the parameter backup without relying on one technician's computer.
