A water-level RTU installation succeeds only when the field measurement, power system, signal interface, telemetry and remote platform share the same reference and failure rules. A reliable sensor can still produce poor data through an incorrect datum, insufficient solar autonomy, ungrounded analog loop, wrong Modbus byte order or a platform that displays stale values as current. The installation plan should define every boundary, verify environmental and lightning protection, and test normal operation, outages and recovery from the physical water reference to the final user.
Establish the level datum
Survey the sensor reference relative to the required elevation, channel zero or tank zero. Record offsets, units and benchmark coordinates. Identify expected low, high and flood levels and protect the near range. If the site moves, settles or is serviced, the permanent benchmark allows the measurement to be restored without inventing a new software offset.
Select and mount the sensor
Confirm the principle suits water surface, foam, waves, debris, sediment, vapour and range. Mount on a rigid structure clear of obstructions and direct turbulence. Check radar or ultrasonic blocking distance, pressure-probe venting or other principle-specific limits. Provide safe access and theft or impact protection without blocking the measurement path.
Engineer field power
Calculate transmitter, RTU, modem, heater and accessory loads during normal, transmit and startup states. For solar systems, include seasonal irradiation, panel angle, battery temperature, aging, autonomy and charging losses. Define low-voltage behavior and recovery. Protect wiring with suitable fusing, isolation and surge coordination rather than relying on nominal battery capacity.
Verify analog or digital signals
For 4–20 mA, check loop voltage, resistance, isolation, shielding, fault current and scaling. For RS485 or Modbus, check polarity, topology, termination, address, baud, parity, function code, register, data type and byte order. Record raw values and engineering conversion. Ensure sensor fault is distinguishable from a real low water level.
Build environmental protection
Select enclosure, glands, vents, cable and connectors for rain, flooding, condensation, temperature, UV, corrosion and animals. Use drip loops and seal unused entries. Coordinate grounding and lightning protection for sensor, mast, panel, power and communications. Inspect the finished cable route and enclosure after all civil and solar work is complete.
Configure telemetry and buffering
Define protocol, device identity, timestamps, sample and transmit intervals, retry, buffer size, deduplication and backfill. Keep original measurement time during outages. Test weak or lost coverage. The remote platform should display communication age and quality and must not overwrite newer data with delayed records.
Test alarms and remote users
Verify thresholds, hysteresis, delay, units, time zone, recipients, acknowledgement and escalation. Simulate high water, sensor fault, low battery and stale communication through the approved methods. Confirm that users can distinguish a measurement alarm from a system fault and know the field or operational response expected.
Complete end-to-end acceptance
Compare surveyed water references with sensor, RTU raw value, payload, platform and reports at useful points. Cycle field power and communications, then verify buffering, recovery and no duplicate totals or alarms. Retain drawings, datum survey, configuration, credentials ownership, firmware, tests and maintenance triggers under the site asset record.

Frequently asked questions
Can a software offset replace a survey?
No. A permanent physical datum is needed to restore and audit the level reference.
What is the common solar-system mistake?
Using average load and ideal sunlight without startup current, seasonal conditions, aging and autonomy.
Why keep original timestamps during backfill?
They preserve the real measurement sequence and prevent delayed data from appearing current.
