Radar Level Commissioning Approval: Evidence and Sign-Off

Commissioning approval is the formal decision that a radar level measurement is fit for its intended site duty. It should be based on traceable evidence, not on the absence of an alarm during a short observation. The record must connect the exact instrument to the approved application, prove installation and configuration, compare readings with known references, test output and fault behaviour, and close deviations. The sign-off also establishes the baseline that maintenance will use when diagnosing buildup, geometry changes, drifting inventory or communication failures.

Confirm identity and design compliance

Record tag, manufacturer, exact model code, serial number, firmware, antenna, process connection, materials, output and approval marking. Match these to the approved datasheet and purchase documentation.

List installed adapters, barriers, glands, surge devices and remote displays. Record approved substitutions and unresolved deviations rather than hiding them in general completion notes.

Inspect mechanical installation

Measure reference plane, empty distance, nozzle bore and length, antenna projection, orientation and maximum-level clearance. Check the beam against internal structures and fill streams.

Verify pressure boundary, grounding, weather protection and safe access. Use photographs with tag and orientation so the as-left arrangement can be reconstructed later.

Review configuration and diagnostics

Export range, blocking distance, response speed, product group, false-echo map, fault current, address and output variable. Confirm settings from the design basis.

Capture labelled echo curves at known or stable states and verify the selected target. Record process condition, actual reference and signal margin with each curve.

Test measurement and integration

Compare radar distance and level with an independent reference at representative points. Follow the value through analog or digital output, PLC scaling, HMI, historian and any volume conversion.

Check units, timestamps, quality status and update rate. Investigate discrepancies before applying offsets, and document every accepted correction and its evidence.

Prove alarms and failure response

Test high, low, rate and diagnostic alarms with configured delays. Verify the final interlock, pump, valve or conveyor action and operator annunciation.

Test lost echo, over-range, power loss and communication failure. Verify independent protective devices separately and remove all temporary bypasses before release.

Complete responsible sign-off

Assign every remaining action an owner, risk and date. Operations, maintenance, instrumentation and the relevant safety owner should approve the parts within their responsibility.

Store drawings, parameters, curves, test results and training evidence in the asset record. Schedule an early-service review after representative cycles and define triggers for recommissioning.

Define the approved operating envelope

The sign-off should state which products, levels, temperatures, pressures, agitator states, fill rates and atmospheric conditions were observed or otherwise justified. Separate tested conditions from supplier-supported but unobserved conditions and from conditions outside the approval. Assign a future test or operating restriction where evidence is incomplete. This avoids treating one successful commissioning day as proof for every seasonal, batch or abnormal state that the instrument may encounter during its service life. Review the open envelope with operators after the first full production campaign and formally close or extend each restriction using recorded evidence.
