80 GHz Radar Level Commissioning: Field Tests and Handover

Commissioning an 80 GHz radar level meter must prove more than a plausible number on the local display. The field test should confirm that the installed nozzle, antenna and beam match the approved design; that reference distances and process settings are correct; and that the value reaches the PLC, HMI and alarms without scaling or quality errors. The narrow beam can simplify difficult geometry, but it can also track a local solids profile or a strong target that looks convincing. Acceptance therefore needs known references, representative process states and saved diagnostic evidence.

Verify the delivered and installed unit

Check model code, antenna, process connection, materials, temperature and pressure limits, output, firmware and approval marking against the approved datasheet. Record serial number and photographs.

Measure nozzle bore and length, antenna projection, alignment, reference plane and clearances. Confirm that adapters, valves and covers match the drawing and do not obstruct the beam.

Set the measurement geometry

Enter empty distance, tank zero, span, blocking distance and maximum safe level from measured site dimensions. Do not copy settings from the removed instrument without reconciling reference planes.

For irregular tanks, control the strapping or linearization table and its units. For solids, state how the selected beam location relates to the sloping material surface.

Review echo quality

Capture the raw echo curve at an empty or known level and label fixed structures. Confirm that the selected target corresponds to the physical surface and has adequate margin.

Repeat during filling, agitation, dust, foam or low level where practical. Configure false-echo suppression only for verified fixed targets outside the real product zone.

Check output and communication

Compare local distance and level with 4–20 mA, HART or digital values, PLC raw input, scaled engineering value and HMI display. Verify units and decimal placement.

For Modbus, test address, data type, byte order, polling and quality status. Record loop voltage, grounding and shielding checks where relevant.

Prove alarms and faults

Test high, low and diagnostic alarms with the configured damping and delay. Verify annunciation, interlock or shutdown at the final equipment, not only a software force.

Test lost echo, over-range, under-range, power interruption and communication loss. Independent overfill protection must be tested separately from the process radar.

Create the handover baseline

Save parameters, echo curves, known-level comparisons, output checks, alarm results, firmware and as-left photographs. Remove temporary forces and bypasses before normal operation.

Assign follow-up actions and schedule an early review after representative operating cycles. Recommission after antenna, nozzle, product, firmware or significant configuration changes.

Verify performance after startup

Commissioning should include an agreed early-service review after the radar has experienced representative filling, emptying, temperature and cleaning conditions. Compare new echo curves, confidence, lost-echo events and manual or inventory references with the as-left baseline. Investigate changes before modifying suppression or damping. Close the review with operations and maintenance acceptance, update the parameter backup if approved changes were made, and record any operating region that remains untested so it is not later assumed to have been proven.

It confirms an offset but does not prove span, tracking or response across the operating range.

Should automatic false-echo mapping be accepted unchanged?

No. Review mapped targets against vessel geometry and the real product zone.

When is commissioning complete?
