A hazardous-area weighing system is not made compliant by calling one component explosion-proof. Load cells, junction boxes, barriers, transmitters, cables, glands, enclosures and installation practices must fit one documented protection concept. Gas and combustible-dust hazards also require different classifications and temperature considerations. The project should start from the site's hazardous-area dossier, then verify exact certificates, entity parameters, wiring and maintenance boundaries for the complete measurement loop.
Define the classified location
Obtain the exact zone or division, gas or dust group, temperature class, ambient range and equipment protection level from the responsible site authority. Record dust layer and cleaning assumptions where relevant. Do not select from the general phrase explosion-proof or intrinsically safe.
Choose the protection concept
Compare intrinsic safety, flameproof or explosion-proof enclosure, increased safety and other permitted methods for sensor and electronics. Consider normal operation, faults, calibration and maintenance access. A mixed system must preserve the requirements at every interface and boundary.
Verify certificate scope
Check manufacturer, exact model and suffix, certificate number, standards, marking, ambient limits and special conditions of use. Confirm whether cable, connector, junction box and accessories are included or separately certified. A family brochure is not evidence for the installed configuration.
Calculate intrinsically safe loops
Where intrinsic safety is used, compare voltage, current, power, capacitance and inductance entity parameters for source, barrier, cells and cables. Include multiple parallel cells and junction box. Retain the loop calculation and approved drawing. Do not rely solely on matching connector shape.
Control temperature and material
Assess load-cell self-heating, process heat, sunlight, dust layers and nearby equipment. Verify temperature class and maximum surface temperature under allowed faults. Select materials and seals for chemicals, corrosion and washdown without invalidating the protection method.
Install approved wiring
Use specified glands, seals, segregation, bonding and earth. Maintain enclosure flame paths and torque requirements. Label safe and hazardous circuits and prevent unauthorized changes. Protect low-level signals from interference while preserving the certified grounding and shield arrangement.
Commission faults and functions
Inspect markings and installation against drawings before energizing. Verify barrier model, wiring, insulation, excitation, weight calibration and control-system fault behavior. Test power loss, open circuit and communication failure without violating safety procedures. Record authorized inspection and as-built evidence.
Maintain certification integrity
Define competent inspection intervals, enclosure and gland checks, corrosion control, spare equivalence and permit requirements. Reassess after any sensor, barrier, cable, box, firmware or process change. Keep certificates and loop drawings accessible to maintenance, not only procurement.
Engineering checklist
- Use the site's exact classification.
- Choose one documented protection concept.
- Verify exact model certificate and conditions.
- Retain intrinsic-safety loop calculations.
- Inspect glands, bonding and segregation.
- Control all replacements and changes.
Frequently asked questions
Is an IP-rated load cell explosion-proof?
No. Ingress protection and hazardous-area protection are different requirements.
Can certified components be combined freely?
No. The complete loop and installation must meet certificate and protection-concept conditions.
Does intrinsic safety remove calibration needs?
No. It limits ignition energy; measurement performance still requires calibration and verification.
Decision record
Record the selected architecture, operating cases, assumptions, accepted limits and responsible approver. Attach drawings, calculations, calibration evidence and unresolved deviations. Include inspection interval, spare strategy, fault response and recoverable configuration location. Assign an owner and closure date to each conditional acceptance. Review actual drift, faults and maintenance findings after representative service, and revise the engineering basis when evidence contradicts an assumption. Make the record available to operations and maintenance, with revision history and asset identity, so later adjustments can be compared with the accepted baseline rather than treated as undocumented tuning.
