METRAVON MV-RD908F is an IP68-rated radar water level meter with a sealed PP housing for drainage, manhole and river monitoring. The 26 GHz instrument measures the water surface without a submerged sensing probe and has a listed distance range up to 30 m. The installation must still keep the measurement path clear at the highest required water level.
IP68 protection and submerged measurement are different requirements
The enclosure rating addresses water ingress under specified conditions. It does not establish that radar can continue measuring the water surface while its antenna is underwater. At a site that can flood above the sensor, distinguish equipment survival from valid level measurement and define how the receiving system should flag unavailable data.
Ask for the applicable immersion depth and duration, the cable-entry arrangement and the conditions for any connector. A protected instrument with an unsuitable cable splice can still leave the monitoring station vulnerable. Installation above the expected flood level may be preferable where the site geometry allows it.

Use the distance from the antenna reference to the lowest required water surface when checking range. At the other end, reserve the required near-antenna clearance for the highest level, including surges. A catalogue range starting at zero should not be interpreted as permission to measure with water against the antenna.
A manhole survey should include more than depth
Show the wall, access ladder, pipe entries, cover and proposed bracket on a section sketch. Water falling from an inlet and floating debris can produce a different return from the water surface of interest. Select a position that can see a representative surface without obstructing maintenance access.
Record the installed radar reference elevation against the site's chosen datum. Retain that record separately from the display settings so a replacement or bracket movement can be checked. Agree whether the host needs distance, depth above a local zero or water elevation; those values are not interchangeable.
The sensor output does not provide a remote communication service by itself. An RTU, data logger or gateway must acquire the selected output and handle transmission, stale data and outage recovery. Confirm the device register information or analog scaling before the station is commissioned.
Flood-site questions
Q1. Can IP68 be specified without an immersion duration?
It is incomplete for a site where immersion is expected. Obtain the manufacturer's conditions for the exact enclosure and lead assembly, then compare them with the flood exposure. Do not turn a general ingress rating into an unlimited underwater-service commitment.
Q2. Is a 30 m range enough for any manhole less than 30 m deep?
Not necessarily. The working interval must exclude the blind region, and the beam must remain clear of structures. Review the actual lowest and highest surfaces, mounting position and obstructions before approving the installation.
Q3. Does this product calculate drainage flow?
Its direct measurement is surface distance or level. Flow calculation needs an applicable hydraulic relationship or additional velocity and cross-section information. Backwater and changing channel conditions can make a simple level-to-flow conversion unsuitable.
Q4. What should be checked after a flooding event?
Under the site's safe-access procedure, inspect mounting, cable damage, deposits and connector condition. Compare a fresh level reference with the local and transmitted readings. A recovered communication link alone does not prove that the instrument is tracking the correct surface.
Define the monitoring point with the quotation
Send the site section, water-level extremes, flood exposure and power arrangement in an MV-RD908F enquiry. Request the exact housing, cable, mounting and output details together with an acceptance check for invalid or lost readings. For installations without the sealed PP requirement, review the separate MV-RD908S configuration.
