A shear beam load cell measures strain in a beam while a mounting assembly directs the supported weight through its load point. It is common in tank, hopper, floor-scale and conveyor systems, but the sensor should not be bolted under a structure without an engineered movement and restraint plan. Calculate the worst load on each support from dead load, contents, centre-of-gravity offset, agitation, impact, wind, seismic force and uplift. Equal division by the number of cells is insufficient when supports or foundations deflect differently. Use a stiff, level base and the approved load button, foot or weigh module. The fixed end, loading direction, bolts and spacers must match the drawing. Vessels also expand with temperature, so mounts should define which location is fixed and which directions can move without binding. Map piping, ducts, ladders and cables that can bypass weight around the cells. Use lateral and uplift restraints that remain clear in normal operation. Protect load-cell cables and place the junction box where water cannot collect. Commission with traceable loads, checking zero, span, repeatability and individual support balance. Large electronic trim should trigger a mechanical investigation before acceptance.
Calculate support load cases
Include empty and full vessel, attachments, eccentric contents, agitation, filling impact, wind, seismic and maintenance loads.
Evaluate each support separately for compression, side load and uplift. Select capacity with resolution at the minimum useful process load.
Prepare foundations and supports
Provide flat, stiff pads at controlled elevation and check local plate and leg bending. Use approved grout and fastener details.
Align load introduction vertically through the designed point. Do not add shims or washers that alter the beam's active geometry.
Allow thermal movement
Estimate expansion of vessel, frame and piping across the temperature range. Arrange fixed, guided and free mounts as intended by the module design.
Verify guides and check rods do not bind. Thermal side load produces zero shift and hysteresis that recalibration cannot permanently remove.
Control piping, lateral load and uplift
Use evaluated flexible connections and keep ladders, guards and cables from carrying changing weight. Inspect clearances in every operating state.
Set lateral and uplift restraints for fault conditions while maintaining normal gaps. Clearly remove shipping locks before calibration.
Wire cells and junction box
Use matched cells, protected cables and a serviceable junction box with documented terminal mapping, shield treatment and trim settings.
Preserve individual millivolt or count readings where possible. Support imbalance is a valuable diagnostic for binding or damage.
Calibrate the installed system
Apply traceable load or an approved substitution method at several points. Check return to zero and support or corner response.
Record as-found and as-left values, piping state, restraint gaps and individual outputs. Recheck after structural, piping, mount, junction-box or cell work.

Can shear beam cells be mounted directly under tank legs?
Only with suitable load introduction, movement and restraint hardware; a purpose-designed weigh module is normally safer.

Should every junction-box channel be trimmed equally?
No. Trim only after mechanical alignment and freedom are verified, and document the final individual signals.
