Load cell testing should separate electrical condition, mechanical installation and metrology. A multimeter can find open circuits, shorts, gross bridge imbalance and insulation problems, but it cannot prove accuracy or installed-system performance. Begin with identification and visual inspection, then compare excitation and signal resistance with the data sheet. Check insulation to the body using the manufacturer's approved method and voltage. Energize the cell with a stable supply, observe unloaded output and apply a small known force to confirm polarity. The final test must use traceable loads through the actual structure, transmitter, wiring and PLC scaling. Preserve as-found results before adjustment so damage or drift is not hidden.
Inspect before energizing
Confirm model, serial number, capacity, wiring colours, mounting direction and calibration certificate. Look for dents, corrosion, loose hardware, damaged cable and moisture. Verify shipping locks and overload stops. If overload is suspected, quarantine the cell until mechanical and metrology checks are complete.
Measure bridge resistance
With the cell disconnected, measure input and output resistance using a suitable meter and compare with manufacturer tolerances. Check conductors for opens and shorts. Resistance within range does not prove correct sensitivity, but a large imbalance can identify damage, wrong wiring or a failed connection.
Check insulation and excitation
Measure insulation between bridge conductors, shield and body only with an approved instrument; excessive test voltage can damage electronics. Then verify excitation at the cell under load, not only at the transmitter. Cable resistance, poor terminals or an overloaded supply can reduce voltage and destabilize output.
Review zero and raw signal
Read millivolt-per-volt or raw counts before scaling. Excess zero may indicate overload, side force, mounting preload or structural binding. Gently apply force in the correct direction and confirm sign. Do not use uncontrolled impact or pry on the sensor during troubleshooting.
Apply traceable test loads
Exercise the system and apply several increasing and decreasing loads across the working range. Evaluate repeatability, hysteresis and return to zero. Platforms need corner tests; multi-cell vessels need individual support balance. Record stabilization time, temperature, filter and reference uncertainty.
Verify the complete data path
Confirm transmitter range, decimal point, units, PLC scaling, alarms, batching cut-off and historian value. Inspect shielding and grounding near drives. After adjustment, save configuration and as-left results. Re-test after cable, junction, amplifier, mount or structural changes.

- Record acceptance evidence and as-left settings.
Frequently asked questions
Can a multimeter confirm load-cell accuracy?
No. It can check electrical health, but accuracy requires controlled traceable loading.
Why is bridge resistance normal but output wrong?
Mechanical overload, preload, reversed wiring, unstable excitation or amplifier scaling may still be wrong.
Should zero be adjusted before testing?
Record the as-found zero first, investigate mechanical causes and adjust only under an approved procedure.

For multi-cell systems, record every individual cell output before summing. This exposes corner overload, damaged cable and mechanical restraint. Trend the same readings during maintenance so gradual foundation or piping change is visible.
When comparing a suspect cell with a spare, use the same excitation and loading arrangement and do not infer condition from zero alone. A cell can return near zero yet have changed sensitivity or hysteresis after overload. For dynamic machinery, include response bandwidth and synchronized acquisition checks. Inspect anti-alias filtering and ensure the test force does not exceed fixture or reference limits. Keep reference certificates, raw readings, calculations, environmental conditions and authorization signatures together so the result remains traceable after staff or software changes.
