Radar, guided-wave radar, ultrasonic, hydrostatic, capacitance, float, vibrating and weighing technologies respond to different physical properties. Provide medium, range, vessel drawing, pressure, temperature, vapour, foam, dust, coating, density, dielectric behaviour, connection, output, hazardous-area classification and required accuracy. Then compare exact model, antenna or probe, process seal, housing, cable entry, accessories, certificates, configuration and commissioning. A low base price can become expensive when installation changes or missing components appear later.
Define the measurement function
State continuous level, interface, point alarm, pump control or mass inventory. Identify trip or accuracy requirements and the consequence of an incorrect value. Critical overfill may need an independent protection path rather than a single transmitter used for every function.
Screen technology by process
Use process conditions to eliminate unsuitable principles before comparing cost. Vapour and temperature gradients challenge ultrasonic; density changes affect hydrostatic; dielectric and geometry affect radar; buildup affects probes; floats need free movement. The cheapest unsuitable technology has no useful value.
Fix the mechanical configuration
Send nozzle diameter and length, reference plane, internals, maximum level and removal clearance. Confirm wetted materials, gasket, pressure rating and antenna or probe. Price brackets, flanges, chambers, isolation and thermal extensions explicitly so quotations have the same boundary.
Compare electronics and approvals
Define power, 4–20 mA, HART, RS485, relay, display, cable and fault output. Verify the exact hazardous-area certificate and special conditions. Include barriers, certified glands, surge protection and grounding where required. A generic family approval may not cover the ordered variant.
Include commissioning evidence

For quotations involving multiple tanks, separate common electronics from vessel-specific process assemblies. Standardizing output and configuration can reduce spares, but do not force one antenna, probe or pressure rating onto unsuitable services merely to simplify purchasing.
The process connection can be a major cost driver because pressure class, seal material, antenna or probe and vessel modification all depend on it. Compare threaded, flanged, sanitary and chamber arrangements only where each is technically permitted. If a nozzle must be enlarged or relocated, include engineering, welding, inspection and downtime in the decision.
