Buying a tank radar level meter is not simply choosing frequency, range and price. The purchase must connect the real vessel and process to an exact antenna, process seal, connection, enclosure, output and certification. It should also define which brackets, barriers, cables, displays, configuration services and documents are included. A technically vague quotation transfers uncertainty to installation and commissioning, where changes cost more. A useful buying specification makes assumptions visible, requires suppliers to list deviations and links payment or release to practical acceptance evidence.
Prepare an application data sheet
Provide tank dimensions, roof and bottom type, nozzle bore and length, internal structures, fill point, level range and all alarm elevations. Include drawings and photographs where available.
List product, dielectric behaviour, temperature, pressure, vapour, foam, agitation, condensation, buildup, hazardous classification and cleaning. Mark unknown values rather than replacing them with generic descriptions.
Define performance by duty
State whether the radar supports process control, inventory, transfer, alarm or environmental reporting. Specify required accuracy, repeatability, response time and availability at the system level.
For solids, distinguish distance accuracy from volume or mass uncertainty caused by surface profile and bulk density. For liquids, identify whether a foam or liquid interface must be followed.
Require an exact offered model
The quotation should list model code, antenna, process connection, seal, materials, pressure and temperature rating, housing, cable entries, power, output and approvals. Verify each suffix.
Require an outline drawing, datasheet and relevant certificates. A general brochure cannot confirm nozzle fit, pressure boundary or hazardous-area compliance for the delivered unit.
Clarify the commercial scope
List mounting adapters, mating flanges, gaskets, isolation devices, surge protection, barriers, local display, cables, remote indicator, software and licenses. Identify supply boundaries clearly.
Separate hardware price from commissioning, calibration, training, freight, taxes, spares and warranty. Compare quotations on the same scope instead of comparing only the transmitter line item.
Plan installation and integration
Confirm nozzle modification, antenna projection, grounding, cable route, loop voltage and PLC or RTU interface before ordering. Check safe access, isolation and shutdown requirements.
Define tag naming, 4–20 mA scaling or register mapping, fault behaviour and alarm responsibilities. Identify who supplies configuration files and as-built drawings.
Attach acceptance criteria
Inspect identity and dimensions on receipt. At site, verify installation geometry, reference plane, configuration, echo curve, known levels, output scaling, alarms and failure response.
Record accepted deviations and outstanding actions. Keep the final model code, serial number, parameters, photographs and test results in the asset record.
Manage supplier clarifications
Use a clarification register to record every supplier question, assumption and deviation before the purchase order. Require technical responses to identify the exact offered model and evidence source, and resolve contradictions between quotations, drawings and manuals. Commercial acceptance should state which document governs if values differ. After award, transfer agreed clarifications into the approved data sheet and inspection plan; otherwise important promises remain in email while installation and commissioning teams work from incomplete purchase documentation. Record the final technical approver and revision date.
