A weak cellular link should be evaluated with measurements, not signal bars alone. RSRP describes received reference power, RSRQ reflects signal quality and loading, and SINR indicates how clearly the wanted signal stands above interference. Record all three together with the radio band, operator, cell identity and network mode. This separates a coverage problem from interference, congestion, an unsuitable antenna or excessive feeder loss.
Establish a repeatable baseline
Export the gateway radio status at the same location and time while using the same SIM and network mode. Record whether the modem is on LTE, 5G NSA or 5G SA, and note any band or cell changes. A single reading is not enough: collect values during normal production and during the reported outage.
Use a known-good phone only as a rough comparison because its antenna system and modem policy differ from an industrial gateway. The decisive evidence is whether the gateway maintains registration, data sessions and acceptable packet loss under its installed conditions.
Verify antenna compatibility and MIMO connections
Confirm that every antenna covers the frequency bands used by the modem and local operator. Match connector type and impedance, avoid unverified adapters, and connect all required main, diversity and MIMO ports. Leaving a required port open can reduce throughput and resilience even when the gateway still registers.
Inspect coaxial cables for sharp bends, crushed sections, corrosion and loose connectors. Long thin feeder cables can erase the benefit of a better antenna. Where practical, shorten the cable and place the gateway closer to the antenna rather than adding another extension.
Choose the mounting position deliberately
Metal cabinets, reinforced concrete, machinery and tanks can shield or reflect radio signals. Mount the antenna outside the enclosure with suitable weather protection and separation from high-current conductors, variable-frequency drives and large metal surfaces. Keep the antenna orientation consistent with the manufacturer's instructions.
Test two or three safe mounting positions before drilling permanent holes. Compare radio indicators, packet loss and reconnect time at each position. A small vertical or horizontal move can change multipath conditions significantly inside an industrial building.
Separate poor coverage from network congestion
Good RSRP with poor RSRQ or SINR often points to interference or a busy cell rather than insufficient antenna gain. Compare performance at different times and, where permitted, with another operator. Do not lock a modem to one band merely because one short test looked better; a locked setting may remove useful failover capacity.
If an external directional antenna is considered, obtain the serving-site direction and confirm that the installation can be aligned and earthed correctly. Excessive gain is not automatically better and may create compliance or overload problems near a base station.
Validate recovery as well as signal quality
After adjustments, force a controlled link interruption and measure registration, IP acquisition and application reconnection time. Confirm that VPN and MQTT sessions recover and that locally buffered records are uploaded once in timestamp order. The acceptance criterion should describe service recovery, not just a minimum signal reading.

Common questions
Is a higher-gain antenna always better?
No. Gain must suit the bands, coverage geometry, cable loss and regulatory limits. A correctly positioned moderate-gain antenna often outperforms a high-gain antenna installed inside a metal cabinet.
Can an antenna amplifier fix the problem?
Usually not as a first step. Bidirectional cellular systems, noise and compliance requirements make uncontrolled amplifiers risky. Correct the antenna, cable and position first.
When should a second operator be used?
Consider dual-SIM or dual-modem resilience when measured outages are operator-specific and the business requirement justifies failover. Test the complete switching and recovery sequence.
